Divorce Counseling & Recovery

Because you can’t help the kids if you’re feeling this crappy.  And you can’t get in with the new if you’re stuck on the old.

Almost half (forty-one percent) of first marriages end in divorce. But why in God’s name did it have to be you? The you who will try to carry on with life as normal, ignoring the fact that you’re going through a divorce.  Or the you who feels hurt and rejected or scared.  But maybe you wanted this divorce, yet you’re still so dang angry. And everyone is angry at you for tearing up your family.
Does any of this sound familiar?

One minute, divorce will make you want to pull your hair out.  The next minute, divorce has you on your knees crying out a puddle, worried about how you’ll do life as a single mom or dad. If you’re stuck on exactly how to start over, divorce counseling can teach you how to move forward to a happier, healthier life after divorce.

What if you could...

Feel more at peace and ready to move on, approaching this new life as though it were a gift instead of a curse? How would it feel to take this on from a place of strength, instead of regret, anger, and blame? What if you could totally clean out all the junk in your emotional closet and make room for a more passionate, healthier relationship that lasts?

Pre-divorce counseling

The times leading to the finalization of your divorce can be both overwhelming and explosive.  You might feel like killing each other would be quicker.  Now before you go doing something that’ll get you locked up for life, you should consider learning ways to effectively communicate like adults.  Pre-divorce counseling includes, but is not limited to:

  • Treatment for Depression
  • Anger Management
  • Effective communication methods to have a civil, healthy, drama-free divorce.
  • Child and/or family counseling to reduce the trauma of divorce for your children.
  • Divorce Prep to prepare emotionally and mentally as you go through the divorce process.
  • Strategies to cope with divorce and other issues that may come up.

Post divorce counseling

It’s likely that you and your homies will finally understand why so many divorcees celebrate the end by throwing a Divorce Party.  Still, life after a divorce is also overwhelming.  Some people even have thoughts of going back to their spouse, because hey, not knowing what the future holds can sometimes seem worse than loving the one you’re with (sorry…or were with).  Post-divorce counseling keeps you from going in circles.

Post divorce counseling includes, but is not limited to:

  • Treatment for Depression
  • Anger Management
  • Child and/or family counseling to reduce the trauma of divorce for your children.
  • Clarity to get through the confusion and worry about losing your marriage and family.
  • Guidance to rediscover yourself outside of your marriage so that you can move forward.
  • Relationship Counseling to foster healthy relationships and prevent another divorce.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

Making the decision to try therapy is a difficult one, and you may be filled with anticipation, nervousness, and uncertainty about what will happen next. To begin the process, you may want to learn more about me to see if we’d be a good fit for each other. Next, go to Crossroads Christian Counseling to SCHEDULE APPOINTMENT and provide your information so that I can contact you to set up an appointment. You may also call the office at 601-939-6634.  Once you have contacted Crossroads Counseling for an appointment and given a brief, general description of why you are seeking counseling, I’ll call you to set up a meeting time for our first appointment that will be mutually convenient.

Do you accept insurance?

At this time, I am an out-of-network provider for most Mississippi insurance providers.

How long does each session last?

Each session typically lasts 50 minutes.  Depending on the type of therapy that is best for you, I may schedule you for a 90 minute session.

How long does it generally take to go through the therapy I need?
This is a difficult question to answer because each person’s situation is unique.  Short-term therapies tend to be geared to meet specific goals and needs and is more structured and directive.  With this type of therapy, clients may find that 5-7 sessions are sufficient.  Long-term therapies address specific goals and behaviors as well but go deeper to understand the origins of feelings and behaviors.  Long-term therapy is well-suited to address pervasive feelings and issues that may be more subtle.  During your initial assessment, we’ll discuss what would be best for you with regards to your goals.

What should I do to prepare for therapy?

Think about what you would like to get out of therapy by considering goals that you have for yourself or your relationships.  Answer the question, “I will feel that counseling will be effective if I accomplish _______________.”

What is play therapy?

Play therapy is a way to help children who are experiencing problems with trauma, anger, grief, divorce, acting-out behaviors, family or relational problems, and school difficulties.  Children can work out problems through the language of play in a way that they cannot with words.  Expressive therapies such as art and play therapy are ideal for helping get to the heart of problems and bringing healing when “talking it out” is ineffective. Our playroom is a safe and understanding environment in I encourage your child to play as he or she wishes using a wide variety of toys that encourage the expression of emotional concerns.
